This is a antique watercolor done by John Smart in 1887. John Smart lived from 1838-1899.The Watercolor is titled "On the Don". John Smart RSA, RSW,RBA, 1838-1899.This Antique Watercolor was done 12 years before his death.
John Smart was born Leith and died Edinburgh. John Smart was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour, often with a sporting involvement mainly golf courses. Most of John earlier landscapes were often painted in England and Wales but as time went by he turned exclusively to Highland Scenery.
The feature watercolor was done in "Aberdreshirie" what is my best guest as the writing is hard to make out. The watercolor is 10"x 7" and in great condition. The original mat is also included which has John Smarts signiture and title of watercolor.The watercolor has been remove from mat to prevent damage to the watercolor due to not being a acid free board.
This antique watercolor would be a great part of any collection.
