We are pleased to offer this fine and exquisite collection of Antique Bird Prints by John Latham (June 27, 1740 - February 4, 1837) was an English physician, naturalist and author. Latham has been called the "grandfather" of Australian ornithology. He was able to examine specimens of Australian birds which reached England in the last twenty years of the 18th century, and was responsible for naming many of them. These included the Emu, White Cockatoo, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Superb Lyrebird and Australian Magpie. He was also the first to describe the Hyacinth Macaw. Latham practised as a physician at Dartford in Kent, where he collected the Dartford Warbler. He retired in 1796 and settled in Hampshire.
His main works were A General Synopsis of Birds (1781-1801) and General History of Birds (1821-28). A General Synopsis of Birds was Latham's first ornithological work and contained 106 illustrations by the author. It described many new species which Latham had discovered in various museums and collections. This collection was publish in 1792 The German edition of John Latham’s "A General Synopsis of Birds", "Allgemeine Ubersicht der Vogel" was published from 1792-1812 in Nuremberg in 4 volumes, which was edited by J. M. Bechstein and included 183 hand-colored engravings.
This collections are originals, as we sell no reproductions. Each Antique Bird Print in this collection is a hand coloured copper engraving. The colours are bright and the details are rich, the paper is a little age toned with very few foxing marks, often seen on prints this age. The Bird Prints are a nice size about 6 ¾ inches by 8 ¾ inches.
